Films currently showing: “Enzo”, “Journey to the Edge of War”, “The Fire Horses”…

THE MORNING LIST
This week, in Enzo , a beautiful posthumous film by Laurent Cantet, directed by Robin Campillo, a teenager (Eloy Pohu, a non-professional actor) flees his comfortable life to become a mason. Meanwhile, Antonin Peretjatko takes us to Ukraine in Journey to the Edge of War . Also worth noting are two cult films being re-released in theaters: The Fire Horses (1965), by Sergei Paradjanov, and A Dream Longer Than the Night (1976), by Niki de Saint Phalle.
To have
"Enzo": a class defector, at the bottom of the poolA rich kid who dreams of becoming a mason. Enzo (Eloy Pohu), 16, works as an apprentice on a construction site in La Ciotat (Bouches-du-Rhône) and contemplates his deteriorating hands like a trophy. When his colleagues discover that he lives in a villa with a swimming pool, they are stunned. "What are you doing on this construction site?" asks one of the workers, Vlad, a Ukrainian (Maksym Slivinskyi). A world separates these two: Enzo only thinks about getting closer to Vlad, whom he desires, the incarnation of another possible life. Eloy Pohu, a non-professional actor, and Maksym Slivinskyi, a mason in real life, are excellent; the kindness and intelligence of the parents (Elodie Bouchez and Pierfrancesco Favino) bring subtlety to this story that does not seek confrontation, but looks deep into the eyes of a struggling teenager. Seeing Enzo's darkened face, fearing he will not be able to free himself, upsets us. Somewhere, he is trapped between his walls. Cl. F.
